Riding the Bus

So, we have now accomplished the impossible; our 7 yr old is riding the bus. I know this does not seem an extraordinary feat, but for him and for me it is quite a big deal. He had a fear of the bus; the noise, the kids, not having a parent drive him. I have never had to ride a bus since I went to private Catholic school (we'll go into that at another time). So, I tried to help him overcome these things, but wasn't the best at it. My husband was riding the bus in kindergarten, but was no better equipped to help. His approach was to point out that he had been riding the bus in kindergarten, to which our son just gave him a look that said "good for you, would you like a cookie?" It finally just took telling him that he was riding it home from school and that was his only choice. It took two more days to get him to ride the bus to school, but now he's doing well. He even has a fifth grader looking out for him. This boy in our complex is so sweet. He is in fifth grade, but must be used to being around younger kids (our son is in first grade) because within days of moving in he was already hanging out at our house. He has formed a friendship with our son and makes sure he's on the bus in the mornings and gets to our door in the afternoons. What more could parent ask for?
