The "could have been"

I read a post on someone's blog earlier this week that got me thinking. She posted about the "could have been(s)" and I apologize to her because for the life of me I cannot remember the name of her site to give her the deserved credit. Anyway, I believe everyone has a "could have been". I know I have mine.

My "could have been" was a boy I dated my freshman year of high school. We've remained good friends ever since and I really believe he may have been my first love. Puppy love yes, but love none the less. We weren't a very good couple. I think the maturity levels played a large role, but we were really great at being friends.

In the years that have past, we all know the decisions I've made and the path I'm on. He hasn't had a very easy go of things and got in a bit of trouble, but I always knew his personality well enough to know that he could always clean up his act. He's always been a very dedicated worker and pretty laid back.

I sometimes sit back and wonder... "what would life have been like?" Would I still be happily married? Would I still have wonderful children? Would I have finished college? Where would I have ended up? What would I be?

I know the answers to these questions are irrelevant, but isn't that why we ask? Isn't that why people wonder if the grass is really greener on the other side? We're a society of curiosity. We always want what we can't have and we're always willing to try something once.

Do you have a "could have been"? Tell me your stories. It could be anything from a past boy/girlfriend, a job you didn't take, an opportunity you didn't have time for, etc. I want to hear your curiosities. Sometimes it's fun, but never allow it to be depressing. Just remember, you're always on the path that you're suppose to be at that time in your life.
